Who is the "Safe Lifting" overhead crane training program intended for?
This training is intended for anyone who operates or works with overhead cranes and needs up-to-date knowledge about their safe use.
This course is suitable for, for example:
- crane operator
- industrial and manufacturing workers
- workshop staff
- warehouse and logistics staff
- maintenance and service staff
- supervisors and others responsible for work involving the use of an overhead crane.
What will you learn?
Overhead crane work often involves handling heavy loads in environments where people, machinery, and other equipment are nearby.
This training course provides you with knowledge on how to plan and carry out overhead crane operations in a safe and controlled manner.
The course covers, among other things:
Current Rules for Overhead Cranes and Safe Lifting: A Brief Guide
You will receive an overview of the sections of AFS 2023:11 that are relevant to working with overhead cranes, including knowledge requirements, responsibilities, safe use, inspections, and documentation.
The Structure and Function of the Traverse
You will learn how an overhead crane works and gain an understanding of, for example, the crane bridge, hoist, lifting mechanism, hook, brakes, limit switches, control devices, and safety features.
Load, Weight, and Center of Gravity
You will learn how a load's weight, center of gravity, and stability affect a lift, and why a test lift can be important before moving the load.
Lifting Equipment and Load
The training covers basic knowledge of common lifting equipment, markings, and WLL, as well as how lifting angles and various loads affect the lift.
Safe Maneuvering
You'll learn how to operate the overhead crane in a controlled manner and how to prevent risks in situations such as:
- Start and Stop
- oscillating load
- cutback
- movement of cargo
- limited visibility
- risk of being pinched
- risk of collision.
Communication and Signaling
During many lifting operations, the overhead crane operator works in coordination with other people.
The course therefore covers communication, signaling, and how to handle the work when the operator does not have a full view of the lifting area.
Risks and Emergencies
You'll learn to recognize risks that can lead to accidents or incidents and how to respond if something goes wrong.
For example, this could include:
- falling or unstable load
- risk of being pinched
- technical errors
- heavy commuter traffic
- collision
- people in the risk area
- malfunction in the control system
- power outage.
Inspection and Safe Use
You will also learn about the important checks to perform before and during the use of the overhead crane, as well as how to handle errors and deviations.
Current requirements under AFS 2023:11
The Swedish Work Environment Authority’s regulations stipulate that lifting devices and lifting equipment may only be used by persons who are thoroughly familiar with the work and possess the knowledge necessary for safe use.
- The knowledge shall, in relevant areas, include, among other things:
- current workplace safety regulations
- the equipment's design
- Operation and Control
- Properties and Applications
- limitations
- maintenance and inspection.
The employer must also maintain documentation of the employee’s knowledge and issue written authorization for the use of power-driven lifting equipment. This online training course focuses on theoretical knowledge and is particularly well-suited as a review and refresher course or as a supplement to the practical component.
For individuals who are new to overhead crane operations, the employer must also ensure that they have the practical skills required for the specific equipment in question. Refresher training for overhead crane operators
Knowledge must be kept up to date when working with lifting equipment. This training course is therefore a convenient way for companies to allow experienced overhead crane operators to review safety rules, update their knowledge, and document their training.
The course can be completed without having to adjust production to accommodate a specific training session. Participants complete the training online at a time that works for their business.
Training Certificate: Travers Card
After completing the training and passing the knowledge test, the participant will receive a digital certificate of completion.
The training can also be registered in the ID06 Competency Database, which makes it easier for both participants and employers to keep track of completed competencies.
