Objective

Every year, accidents occur during excavation work, sometimes with fatal consequences. Excavating safely requires knowledge, experience and attention. Safe excavation is achieved when work is supervised and carried out by skilled and experienced personnel who monitor soil and water conditions and adapt their working practices accordingly.

For all excavation works, the project manager (or equivalent) is responsible for the appointment of an excavation supervisor, usually the site manager or production manager. To be appointed as an excavation supervisor, it is advisable that the person has the following qualifications or equivalent:
  • Completed the BAM (Better Working Environment) course
  • Good knowledge of the working method, for example by having attended the Safe Excavation course.
