Why is Road Work Important?

Working on the road involves many risks, both for the workers and for those traveling on the roads. According to the Swedish Transport Administration, it is a requirement that everyone working on or near roads undergoes these training courses. The courses ensure that everyone involved in road work has the knowledge required to maintain the highest possible safety.

Target group and course information

This course corresponds to the previous title "Working on roads level 1" and is designed for all those who work on roads where the assignment is procured by the Swedish Transport Administration. The course provides participants with the basic competence according to Step 1.1, which is a requirement for carrying out certain types of road works.

Examples of Work Areas Covered by the Basic Skills

Step 1.1 is sufficient for works that are only affected to a limited extent by passing vehicle traffic, such as

- Tunnelling and related tasks before opening to traffic
- bridge construction and related tasks before opening to traffic
- Installation and maintenance of plant components and similar.

Note: For work near passing traffic, in addition to 1.1, competence according to Work on roads 1.3 is required.

Course Content and Guidelines

The course follows the Swedish Transport Administration's guidelines according to TDOK 2018:0371 and TDOK 2018:0372. It contains, among other things:

- Laws and regulations applicable to road works.
- Personal protective equipment and its use
- Workplace zoning and its definitions
- Road user behavior and its impact on safety
- Speed and crash violence, including the importance of adaptive driving.
- Information on the Work Environment Act (AML) and associated regulations, with a focus on risk analysis.
- The roles and responsibilities of the Swedish Transport Administration, the traffic engineer and the project manager.
- The employer's responsibility and safety organization at the workplace.
