Background

Electrical work is among the most hazardous tasks in the installation, industrial, and energy sectors. An incorrect work method or inadequate risk assessment can lead to serious personal injury, electric arcs, fires, operational downtime, and extensive property damage. Therefore, all work on electrical systems is based on clear safety principles, established work methods, and a comprehensive set of regulations.

The basic principle is that electrical work should always be performed with the power off whenever practically possible. In certain situations, however, this is not possible or appropriate, such as during troubleshooting, measurement, testing, or when disconnecting the power would pose significant safety risks or cause extensive operational disruptions. In these cases, live-line work (AMS) may be necessary, provided that the work is carefully planned and performed by personnel with the proper qualifications and appropriate equipment.

Work involving live electrical systems places significantly higher demands on planning, risk assessment, work methods, and personal protective equipment than traditional electrical installation work. Each work step must be preceded by a documented risk assessment and carried out in accordance with established safety procedures. The employer is responsible for ensuring that the personnel performing the work have sufficient knowledge and practical skills for the task at hand.

This training program has been developed to provide electricians and other electrically qualified personnel with a solid theoretical understanding of how to plan, organize, and carry out live-line work safely. The course covers topics such as risk assessment, technical protective measures, roles and responsibilities, work methods, and the fundamental principles underlying safe work on or near live electrical installations.

The training program is based on Swedish legislation, relevant regulations from the Swedish Electrical Safety Authority, and established industry standards such as SS-EN 50110-1 – Operation of Electrical Installations. The goal is to provide participants with the theoretical knowledge required to understand the risks, make well-informed safety decisions, and contribute to a safe work environment when working on electrical installations.
