Target group

It is important that employers ensure that all workers on a construction site have completed scaffolding training and have the necessary certification to ensure that everyone is working safely.This course is specifically aimed at people who work with scaffolding, including scaffolding erectors, supervisors and anyone involved in the process of building, altering or dismantling scaffolding that is up to 9 metres high.

According to AFS 2013:4 § 47, it is mandatory that a person with sufficient knowledge and experience of such work must lead the work when erecting, significantly modifying or dismantling scaffolding. This person must have undergone general or specific scaffolding training and have at least the theoretical level of training required for the work.

It is also important that workers performing the work have received specific information and appropriate training for the work to be carried out, including the specific risks this may involve. Failure to provide documentation of the training may result in the employer being fined. In this case, the penalty must be paid for each worker who cannot prove that he or she has the training required for the work in question.

What level of education is required & Frequently asked questions

Workers must have received training at the level required for the job. The following table gives an overview of the training levels, and also indicates the conditions and limitations for them

For those who, to a limited extent, carry out work with
scaffolding with a maximum of 2 m to the working plane and where the design is shown in a general
assembly instruction.

For those who, to a limited extent, carry out work with
craftsman scaffolding and mobile scaffolding with a maximum of 5 m
to the work plan and where the design is shown in a general
assembly instruction.

For those who carry out work on scaffolding with a maximum
of 9 m (four boom layer heights) to the working plane and where the design is shown in a general
assembly instruction.

For those who carry out work on scaffolding whose final
height exceeds 9 m or more complex scaffolding than
those mentioned above.

For those who carry out work with weather protection regardless of
its height and method of installation. For this additional training
the "Special training on scaffolding" is needed as a basis.

For those who carry out work with special scaffolding structures not covered
by "Special training on scaffolding". For this additional training, "General training on scaffolding" is needed as a basis.

Up to two metres you can build a scaffold without training. Below two metres it does not count as a scaffold. 

A personal certificate is issued upon completion of the training. The course is recommended to be repeated every five years.

 
According to the Swedish Work Environment Authority, anyone erecting scaffolding must plan the work and ensure that:
  • the work of assembling the scaffolding is carried out in a safe manner.
  • check the scaffolding at the latest before it is handed over.
  • ensure that the scaffolding provides a good working environment for those who will use it.

Briefly, a scaffold can be described as follows: it is a temporary technical device; it must be composed of several (at least two) different components; the maximum height from the ground to the working plane (or equivalent) must be at least 1.25 metres.
