APV Step 1.4 - APV competence Guard and Pilot
Target group:
The course is aimed at road workers who will work as flagmen responsible for stopping, guiding and directing traffic through road works. Participants must be able to communicate in Swedish and hold at least a B driving license.

- Traffic management: Competence in directing traffic by means of road signs, traffic signal or guard supplemented by barrier and/or pilot (single and double).
- Warning clothing and positioning: Knowledge of warning clothing requirements, marking design and positioning location.
- Work Preparedness and Risk Management: Ability to follow work preparedness, manage risks and act properly as a guard and pilot.
- Vehicle and Incident Management: Understanding waiting time requirements, handling priority vehicles and responding to unauthorized passage or other risky events.
In order to ensure that all guards and pilots work according to the applicable requirements and maintain good road safety, each actively working guard team shall have at least one certified person according to step 2.2 responsible for this.

1. What are the requirements to become a flag guard?
To become a flag guard, you must be able to communicate in Swedish, hold at least a driving license B and meet the competence requirements according to APV Steps 1.1 to 1.4. You also need to undergo certification according to the Swedish Transport Administration's standards.
2. What does the APV Step 1.4 - APV competence Guard and Pilot mean?
APV Step 1.4 covers competence in traffic control using road signs, traffic signals or guards, including the use of booms and/or pilots. It also includes requirements for high-visibility clothing, signage and positioning site design, and risk management and incident response.

4. How often do I need to renew my flag guard certification?
Every 4 years the training should be repeated.
5. What is my role and responsibility as a flagger at roadworks?
As a flagger, your main task is to stop, guide and/or direct traffic through road works in a safe and efficient manner. You are also responsible for following safety regulations, managing risks, and responding to incidents to ensure road safety for both workers and road users.
