EL Authorization Training - What you need to know

Becoming an authorized electrician in Sweden is an important step for both individual professionals and companies working with electrical installations. Authorization training gives you the knowledge and authority required to carry out electrical installation work in accordance with current rules from the Swedish Electrical Safety Authority. Here we go through what an authorization means, what requirements are set and the various authorizations that apply in electrical installation.

What does Electricity Authorization mean?

Electrical authorization means that you have the right to independently perform electrical installation work in various types of facilities. To obtain authorization, both relevant training and documented practical experience are required. This is regulated in the Swedish Electrical Safety Authority's regulations, especially in ELSÄK-FS 2017:4, which sets requirements for both companies and electrical installers to ensure safety and quality of work.

Requirements for Companies Performing Electrical Installations

All companies that carry out electrical installation work must be registered with the Electrical Safety Authority. In addition, the company must have a self-inspection program, which ensures that all work is carried out in accordance with current rules and regulations. It is important that the company can document that they have employees with the right authorization to perform electrical installation work.

The self-monitoring program includes, among others:

• Procedures for safety and quality in electrical installation work.
• Documentation of the work carried out.
• Division of responsibilities within the company to ensure that all work is carried out by authorized personnel.

The Different Authorities in Electricity Authorization

The Electrical Safety Authority regulates three main types of authorizations for electrical contractors:

1. Authorization A (Full Authorization)
   This authorization entitles you to work with both high and low voltage installations. It is the most comprehensive authorization and requires both solid training and at least four years of documented practical experience in electrical installation work. With Authorization A, you can carry out work in both industrial environments and larger commercial properties.

2. Authorization AL (Low Voltage)
   Authorization AL is limited to work with low voltage installations, which means voltages up to 1000 volts AC or 1500 volts DC. This authorization is suitable for those who want to work on installations in homes, offices or small commercial buildings. The requirements for Authorization AL are slightly lower than for Authorization A, but still include training and documented practical experience.

3. Authorization B (Limited Authorization)
   Authorization B gives the right to carry out more limited work on low-voltage installations, such as the installation and maintenance of light fittings, sockets and simple electrical systems. This authorization requires at least two years of practical experience and an approved training course covering electrical theory and safety regulations.

How Can You Get Your Electricity Authorization?
