Description

ADR RID 1.3 Railway

What is ADR RID 1.3?

The ADR-S and RID-S regulations broadly follow the rules laid down in the international ADR and RID agreements. These agreements apply to transportation across national borders and are applicable when at least two countries are involved in the transportation.

For a transport operation to be considered international, it must cross borders and involve the territory of at least two different countries.

For EU/EEA member countries, the requirement to use ADR and RID also applies to transport within and between these countries.

Dangerous goods

Dangerous goods is an umbrella term describing goods that, if not handled correctly during transportation, can cause harm to people, animals, vehicles, property and the environment around them. Although some goods are not inherently dangerous, they may present risks and hazards during transportation due to the external factors and stresses involved in transportation.

To be classified as dangerous goods, the acute risk must be linked to the chemical or physical properties of the goods. This could be, for example, explosive, flammable, toxic, radioactive or corrosive substances. Examples of dangerous goods include things like petrol, LPG, alcoholic beverages, arsenic, fireworks, matches, spray cans, disinfectants and substances that can contaminate water.

A common feature of dangerous goods is that they can only be transported under specific conditions. Some goods are so dangerous that they cannot be transported at all.
